EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Sun worshipers and "curious" beings alike are invited to gather at the one-of-a-kind, world famous, Sundial Bridge in Redding at 11:00 a.m. on June 21, 2008.

In Latin, "solstice" means "sun stands still." For several days before and after each solstice, the sun appears to stand still in the sky. The Summer Solstice is, in fact, the moment at which the sun is at its greatest or highest point above the equator. It is the longest day and shortest night of the year and marks the beginning of summer.

Santiago Calatrava's Sundial Bridge in Redding, California, functions both as a pedestrian bridge across the Sacramento River and, due to its shape and position, the world's tallest sundial. The shadow from the bridge's 217-foot angled pylon serves as the sundial's gnomon, casting its giant shadow on a massive dial plate at the bridge's north end, where this year's festivities will take place.

11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the bridge's north plaza (near the McConnell gardens)
